What are the benefits of having my child study music at an early age?
**Research shows that music training with piano/keyboard instruction included enhances the development of young children in many ways:
1. Stronger analytical abilities and spatial-temporal performance
2. Higher test scores in math, reading, and science
3. Improved SAT and IQ scores
4. Better coordination, concentration, and confidence
5. Encourages listening and develops attention span
6. Helps develop gross and fine motor skills
7. Teaches discipline, care, perseverance
Research teams in California and Wisconsin led by Dr. Shaw and Dr. Rauscher explored the link between music and intelligence and reported that music training - specifically piano instruction - is far superior to even computer instruction in dramatically enhancing young children's abstract reasoning skills necessary for learning math and science. The results of the study demonstrated that preschool children who received piano / keyboard lessons performed 34% higher on tests measuring spatial - temporal ability than those preschoolers who received computer or group singing lessons. Furthermore, the effect lasted more “long-term,” according to memory researchers.
Reading and interpreting music at a glance is a language that develops much more than the obvious. Research has found there is no other skill known that reaches as deep into developing concentration, coordination, and confidence as learning piano. Playing the piano requires the use of both hands, both eyes, 10 fingers, both feet and your brain all simultaneously! Carefully structured musical keyboard training should be an essential component in the primary school curriculum.
A University of Toronto study lends support to the idea that music lessons, especially piano, exercise parts of the brain useful in mathematics, spatial intelligence, and other intellectual pursuits. "With music lessons, because there are so many different facets involved--such as memorizing, expressing emotion, learning about musical intervals and chords--the multi-dimensional nature of the experience may be motivating the [IQ] effect," said study author E. Glenn Schellenberg. Musical keyboard training gives children an advantage in science, engineering, and math-related subjects and plays a vital role in a young child’s overall development . New research continues to show piano lessons can help preschool and elementary school students score higher on math, reading, and science tests.
